They've been dropping like flies lately and a PM examination on one which was very non-specific showed poor condition with a heavy infection with Eimeria

RE: Chickens with Salmonella

These are nightmares!

Once the birds become sufficiently weakened it can be a real problem. Still worth talking to the powers that be about repopulating. Spent hens put onto a coccidiostat inclusive diet for a bit.

Dying rare breed birds are not as much fun as 'rescuing' caged birds which can become really good fun.

They are cheap to buy and telling Hillingdon that the press can be out in force may bring results.

Perhaps have a go at saving this lot but prepare the ground for replacements. Photographing the progress of featherless spent hens turning into well covered pets can be very satisfying but not all will make it of course.

My poultry days are in the dim and distant past but is it only broilers that can be vaccinated against coccidia?

RE: Chickens with Salmonella
Depending on numbers it may be more efficient to have a clear out, improve general management and repopulate with a new batch of ex-battery hens.
The problem with that is if they don't get the place completely clean the battery hens may have no immunity against coccidia. They also favour some rarer breeds as it is also a day centre for people with learning disabilities and as that part is run by the London Borough of Hillingdon funds are a bit tight.

RE: Chickens with Salmonella

Depending on numbers it may be more efficient to have a clear out, improve general management and repopulate with a new batch of ex-battery hens.

They can use it as an opportunity to get some good publicity when they arrive.

Not a bad idea to send a couple more for PM (preferably to someone used to poultry PM's) and not just the really knackered ones.

A little bit more 'agricultural' advice than warm and cuddly but can be far more useful in the long run.

Salmonella positive would definitely depopulate, clean, disinfect etc. Better to know what you are dealing with than just guessing.

If a few birds would worm and do what you are doing!

RE: Chickens with Salmonella

They use 'natural products', but I only found a single roundworm in the entire gut of the bird I PM'd.
