Would you vaccinate while she is still pregnant? In principle that seems best to boost the colostral antibody level, but does it depend on the brand? I'm out of touch with this!

Thanks in anticipation

RE: Pregnancy and vaccinations?

From my large animal days...rotavec was recommended in last trimester - 3weeks-3months before due date? 6weeks in bitch therefore being somewhat close to last trimester and allowing 3 weeks for serological response

RE: Pregnancy and vaccinations?
I tend to wait until 6weeks in pup and vacc if overdue or to increase colostrum levels in high challenge situations
Yea, but cows are pregnant longer.

If we assume 2-3 weeks for max serological response and then we need that before the bitch starts producing colostrum. I'd like a month before due as a minimum. Quite happy boosting early pregnant dogs. We use Eurican and that is licensed throughout pregnancy.

RE: Pregnancy and vaccinations?
I would not recommend 6 + 10 weeks for such pups, tend to delay to 7 + 11-12weeks,
This could become a tangent but I would not recommend 6 + 10 weeks vaccination under any circumstances. There is too much evidence to show that delayed fall in MDA at six weeks and underdeveloped immune system at 10 weeks will result in sub-optimal immunity.

Back on thread, I saw a 6 week pregnant bitch yesterday for a pregnancy diagnosis and decided against giving a booster, albeit it was last vaccinated with a full DHPPIL4 a bit less than 2 years ago. The owner is such a fusspot I could see if any pups went tits up it would add fuel to the fire.

RE: Pregnancy and vaccinations?

Yes - I would not recommend 6 + 10 weeks for such pups, tend to delay to 7 + 11-12weeks, but again with little evidence! Can be more difficult where pups are to be sold younger and will recommend 3 vaccs if keen to start early. In line with WSAVA I tend to recommend first 'booster' at 6months if any doubt over schedules received as a pup also

Where dealing with a greyhound kennel with multiple dogs in and out to racing etc I am keen to maintain maternal protection - isolation of mother and pups is often inadequate in first 6-8weeks and hope that if they get that far then individual vacc will take up the rest; no hope if become infected before that!

RE: Pregnancy and vaccinations?

Should breeder then be advised about the pups having high maternal antibody titres and needing "late" or at least not early vaccinations themselves?

If previously unvaccinated (sounds like this is not the case) then no modified live vaccines. If previous vaccination history known, and known to be the same brand/ strains of vaccine, then ok:

per the datasheet for Nobivac DHP "Can be used in pregnant bitches which have previously been vaccinated with the CDV (strain Onderstepoort), CAV2 (strain Manhattan LPV3) and CPV (strain 154) antigens included in the Nobivac vaccine series."

Lepto vaccine can be used during pregnancy (well, Nobivac L4 can, I would expect others to be similar but would check the specific brand datasheet before going ahead)
