The reason I ask is that a referral centre has asked that a dog going for an orthopaedic investigation is given Cerenia

RE: Cerenia as part of pre-med
So is there any answer from the OP as to why it was given, maybe there's something new to learn?
Given at the request of the referral centre prior to anaesthesia for all major investigations or procedures, the evening prior too.

Their statement;

"it has been shown to reduce the vomiting associated with opioids, is thought to reduce the incidence of oesophageal reflux, has a mild analgesic effect so reduces the concentration of volatile anaesthesia needed, and gets patients eating faster postoperatively."

RE: Cerenia as part of pre-med
It's interesting about the analgesic effects of maropitant though - some animals do appear so much more comfortable once it's on board it doesn't seem unreasonable that it's doing more than just relieving nausea.
I have found that animals which I suspect are suffering from nausea do appear very much more comfortable after Cerenia. I hadn't considered that it may also be acting as an analgesic but from my own experience as I suffer horribly from motion sickness and react badly to opioids I would rather be in pain than feel nauseous so if animals feel anything like that we may gain the impression its acting as an analgesic as well.

RE: Cerenia as part of pre-med
I don't do orthopedics but I don't think it has any analgesic effects there
I tend to give omeprazole the night before for older/brachicephalic dogs and before longer procedures.
Why?
In the hope that it is still decreasing gastric pH by the time of anesthesia. Sometimes I pop an omeprazole in a compliant brachycephalic on admission also, particularly if it has history of regurgitation and clinical suspicion of hiatal hernia or similar.

Less-acidic gastric pH = potentially less acid burn to esophagus when cardiac sphincter relaxes = potentially lower risk of post-op esophagitis = potential

Seems worth 10p-20p to me, but I appreciate there's no hard evidence I know of that a capsule with dinner the night before makes a blind bit of (beneficial) difference by time of GA...

RE: Cerenia as part of pre-med

Could it be the dog gets travel sick, and they are intending for cerenia to be pre-emptive for travel to them on the day?

RE: Cerenia as part of pre-med
Why?

Never given Cerenia pre or post op. Stopped using metoclopramide in rabbits.
The reason I ask is that a referral centre has asked that a dog going for an orthopaedic investigation is given Cerenia the night before its anaesthetic the next day.

Not something I have encountered before. I can't remember the last time I had an issue with a patient vomiting during anaesthesia or on recovery.
We don't, and I also can't remember the last time a patient vomited under anaesthesia, there was a bitch spay last week that was drooling and looked nauseous in recovery, I thought about giving it some Cerenia but it settled quite quickly on its own.
Do many routinely give metoclopramide for rabbit anaesthetics?
I used to, but don't at the moment, and haven't found rabbits more likely to develop ileus post-anaesthetic.

RE: Cerenia as part of pre-med
Do many routinely give metoclopramide for rabbit anaesthetics?
