I tend to use a batch for 3 days. Have been told it's fine to freeze/defrost but haven't tried it.

I freeze then defrost a fresh tube daily.

Yes you can freeze it and defrost small amounts for use, we have done this.

How long does the serum collected last for when refrigerated? Can it be frozen at all? I have a colleague who is seeing a case currently (pug puppy) who she has taken serum from other animals for, but we were wondering about the effects of freezing serum in order to make things last longer.

We see LOTS of pugs and Frenchies.

I strongly believe that serum eye drops are a big help. IMO better than commercial preps I have used to date.

Could we be getting better compliance as.clients don't want to waste their pets blood???

As a first opinion practitioner I refer most melting ulcers. If treating them in practice I do use autologous serum (debridement, pain relief, tetracyclines, topical and systemic antibiotics etc, I've had to do a few pedicle grafts), most have done OK. When referring them I will often give them antibiotic drops and a few ml of serum for the journey.

We use acetylcysteine (Ilube) as our anticollagenase of choice so not sure I can add much of an opinion from here about FPP vs serum. Would be very interested to hear if anyone else has any input.

Useful if 'melting' complicated ulcer, though frequent checks needed to make sure they don't progress to needing surgery...

Also useful to know that you can use serum from another animal (need to discuss with the owner if doing this) but does avoid needing to bleed wriggly pugs for instance, or indeed buy FFP which is cheapish and easily stored.

I'd suggest overkill for simple ulcers?
