+1 I always tried to get the owner, after instruction, to express the bladder where the cat usually urinated ie in the garden or a tray etc. If there was some sphincter tone the prognosis, depending on the owner's persistence, was better. Never placed a catheter with these.

RE: Rta cat unable to urinate

From Lamb's 2010 article looking at deep pain in tail and return of ability to urinate:

"In other words, cats that do not regain the ability to urinate

within 30 days always have abnormal deep pain response...

This means that when examining a cat with a sacrocaudal injury,

lack of the normal deep pain response on pinching the tail base

indicates a roughly 40% chance that the cat will not regain ability

to urinate within 30 days (low positive predictive value), whereas

normal deep pain response indicates a high likelihood that the

cat will regain ability to urinate within 30 days (high negative

predictive value)."

trick is to keep bladder empty so don't get overstretch.

personallt i'm happt to sedate and express twice daily for 2-4 days and would place catheter/cystotmy-tube beyond that.

RE: Rta cat unable to urinate

This is a great article on this
