This client has never had her six chihuahuas vaccinated but reluctantly decided to do so in case something happened to her and they needed to go into kennels. All dog were healthy at the time. However about four weeks later her six year old

RE: Dropped jaw

[quote user="dachsie_4"]her six year old only boy developed dropped jaw.
I thought you meant her son!!!

Has she been feeding them Chinese jerky treats or gone mental with the parasite control with her new found enthusiasm for preventative medicine?

RE: Dropped jaw

I'm usually one of the first to dismiss the vaccine as causative but this is one I consider more- could the distemper virus cause these symptoms? I have no personal experience of distemper. am thinking parvo or hepatitis virus or lepto less likely But then there's the liver enzymes (although I wouldn't read too much into that if mild) and the renal failure. I would contact the manufacturer and report as a suspect adverse reaction, and research further, at the very least it shows you are addressing her concerns seriously. Do keep us posted

RE: Dropped jaw

Dropped jaw in the absence of other symptoms and if the patient is swallowing normally is almost always due to some form of bilateral trigeminal neuropathy (has to be both sides affected to cause the jaw to drop) though the aetiology isn't fully understood yet. Immune mediated and infectious causes are likely at play. They typically resolve without any intervention though it can be difficult making the call of course. Some suggest TMj rads to rule out an issue there but if this is affecting multiple dogs you have to be concerned about something infectious or environmental/toxic. I've heard of canine herpes causing this syndrome but it's not usually an older dog issue.

A good neurologist might be able to shed more light on the situation - try speaking to one of the university hospitals.

RE: Dropped jaw

Not quite my field but; mandibular neuropraxis?
