I have been approached by a client who needs advice to extend anoestrus in their bitch to avoid unwanted season while they are unable to spay her due to travelling. The bitch is expected to have her next season in July-August, unfortunately

RE: Choice of medical contraception for female dog to prolong anoestrus until can be spayed
Has anyone had much experience with Tardak for chemical castration?
By David's logic it would be unethical to not spey bitches incase they later develop a pyometra?

RE: Choice of medical contraception for female dog to prolong anoestrus until can be spayed

Thank you very much indeed - will let you know of the outcome. How so?

It's licensed and would suit the issue well. Small risk of pyo, but I can only recall seeing pyos in bitches that had received it multiple times (going back to when I qualified 20 years ago, when spaying was less frequent and I kept seeing 10 year olds than had been given delvosterone year after year).

You could spay now and probably things would be fine, but July is only 4d away and personally I'd view the risk of taking a dog that has had a laparotomy travelling abroad a few days ago higher than an otherwise healthy bitch having an injection in pro-oestrus.

From the data sheet 'the incidence of uterine disorders including pyometra, as only 0.3% overall and no cases occurred in bitches injected in pro-oestrus. ' and that doesn't account for age or number of injections given in the past

RE: Choice of medical contraception for female dog to prolong anoestrus until can be spayed

Why not just spay now or before July?

Delvosterone otherwise. Though risk of pyo arguably makes it bordering on the unethical.

RE: Choice of medical contraception for female dog to prolong anoestrus until can be spayed

Do you have access to any delvosterone?
