I will always attempt emesis with clothing, and some other gastric FBs first, before endoscopy or gastrotomy. I am not concerned about them getting stuck because I am fortunate in that I have immediate access to endoscopy if needed (although never needed it, not for that purpose at least). I think the risk is low. Anybody know if there are studies?

I have mostly left chicken bones to digest spontaneously in the stomach, (so long as they are already in the stomach and the dog is asymptomatic), with advice.

So far no significant issues.

What are other peoples approaches, and why?

I have (rightly or wrongly) not worried about clothing getting stuck in the oesophagus, although usually the fabric that has been eaten was fairly small like a sock. I figure vomiting is about as forceful as swallowing so if it went down it should come back the same way....?

If it was more like a linear foreign body or some time had passed since ingestion and it might have worked its way further into the intestine, I would probably be more cautious.

I get more worried about it with sharp foreign bodies (e.g. dressmakers pin, chicken bone) so have removed these by gastrotomy without inducing vomiting - do others do the same?

Can I just ask whether people routinely make dogs vomit if they have eaten clothing or similar? I always worry about items getting stuck on the way back up.

To be fair, we get a few of these every year. Owners round here know about nasal grass seeds and are normally quick off the mark. The majority of the time we do extract a grass seed!

Not as bad as the dog which the owner reckoned ate a sock purely on the basis that there was one missing from the washing and it was vomiting. I did suggest that if we operated on every vomiting dog when there was a sock missing from the laundry we would be doing ex laps every day but she was insistent. When we finally opened it up the stomach was full of a chewed up football although strangely they hadn't missed that. And the frickin' sock!

Wait until there are signs of obstruction before surgery - very likely the dog will be fine!

the possible consequences of surgery are serious, though unlikely, and it would be good to know you had no choice before making the leap.

Obviously need the clients to be fully informed and on board with any plan.

Definitely wait. My Golden Retriever regularly eats articles of clothing. You name it, she's eaten it. Her digestive system has no problem, but my wife sometimes gets upset. Any treatment should thus be aimed at the owners significant other.
