Creams also get a bit messy with hirsute ear canals -
Don't vets pluck ear canals

RE: primary otic pathogens (and ear plucking)
I generally don't bother specifically treating pseudomonas mastitis in cows.
I've never heard of that back in the day, it was always strep or staph..... would have thought it would be really nasty??

And. er, LWR was the go-to with chronic otitis back-in-the day which is what I suggested for my friend's poodle in Oz with chronic otitis recently.

He [the poodle] was swabbed, specifically treated AND got better... much to my chagrin.

Still can't fathom why ear plucking got 1 star on the other thread; it really can make a difference to an otitis....

RE: primary otic pathogens (and ear plucking)

duplicate, sorry

RE: primary otic pathogens (and ear plucking)
Seems logical that plucking hairs could stimulate more inflammation.
I agree, but it never seemed to, and I often plucked very hairy ears on, say, booster visits when for me it was routine, and don't think I ever saw them back with otitis or even irritation.

Poodles had classically hairy canals!!

The canal hairs seemed very easy and painless when pulled out but once you got the the perimeter of the canal it was very obvious by the pain response and the force needed!!

I only go on about it here because I suspect it isn't done much, so isn't done at all and it seemed to reduce the incidence of otitis.

RE: primary otic pathogens (and ear plucking)

Not an area I'm particularly excited by but I thought ear plucking was out of fashion these days?

Seems logical that plucking hairs could stimulate more inflammation.

Having typed my reply in the other thread re psudomonas - on a number of occasions I've done LWR on dogs culture positive and given a few days amoxycillin as the only antibiotic, they all get better. I generally don't bother specifically treating pseudomonas mastitis in cows.
