Huge sympathy for these owners - my own dog suffered from this and it was horrific - perfectly happy and normal during the day then at bedtime all hell let loose.

RE: CCD/suspected senile dementia in dogs - how to treat

diazepam +/- analgesic eg buprenorphine/meloxicam

RE: CCD/suspected senile dementia in dogs - how to treat

I have found Selgian to be quite effective in some cases. Not all, but some it transforms the dog back to their old self. In those it doesn't work, I sometimes try vivitonin, sometimes things like Adaptil (not convinced by that though). I've also got a couple of dogs on Propranolol, a tip I picked up from Aine Seavers elsewhere. The owners seem to think they are more relaxed. I've never used sedation in case it makes them more anxious. Having said that, we have an elderly Labrador who gets occasional diazepam as it gets anxious late at night and it calms it when she has an episode (every couple of months, maybe some mild seizure activity?)
