Clients always worry the cat won't be able to eat after total extraction and I can always point to my own and say they're probably going to find it easier because they don't have a mouthful of painful teeth anymore. One of ours used to prefer live food anyway and he was still the best mouser we had, we just used to find squashed soggy bodies with no holes in them - it is surprising how much force they can generate even with no teeth!! He must have been frustrated he couldn't chew on them and AFAIA he never managed to swallow one whole.

RE: Lighthearted feline behaviour question

Martin, mine do this too. Mostly the younger one paws around the food bowl of the more geriatric cat.
No idea about the evolutionary (or otherwise) aspect to the behaviour, but at least our little weirdos are not alone.

RE: Lighthearted feline behaviour question
Try the 'executive standard' French food from Virbac!
I've tried it, they weren't that fussed.
I've always considered myself knowledgeable about cat behaviour but wonder if anyone has an answer for this. I put my cat's breakfast down and after looking enthusiastic she sniffed it then turned her back on it and proceeded to scrape her paw on the floor as though she was symbolically attempting to bury it. I've observed this behaviour on many occasions and wondered why. So question:

a) is she demonstrably protesting about the the quality of cuisine on offer (too anthropomorphic),

b) attempting to bury it because she doesn't want it and instinctively wants to get rid of it so it doesn't attract rivals/predators,

c) not hungry so attempting to cache it safely for later as a resource,

d) any other reason which one of you bright people can come up with ?!
Obviously d), you're neglecting your cat by not dressing up in a pressed tuxedo and presenting the dainties on a silver platter from an antique Wedgewood bone china saucer, pre-sliced by highly trained French Ninja chefs! You probably just slopped the food in an old cat bowl and slid it in front of her like a short order cook in a cheap restauraunt!

RE: Lighthearted feline behaviour question
she probably thinks it's a dog's dinner and is trying to get something tastier out of the floor.
