We have 4 females and 1 male raccoon dog to neuter. Does anyone have any experience with the surgery and/or anaesthesia. I'd really appreciate some advice!

Thanks!

RE: Raccoon Dogs - Neutering!
Sorry....I just saw the word Racoon and lept into action on the forum. I iagree ...who needs a " racoon dog"? get a dog!.....from a rescue centre.....be a good citizen....
Mind you we may be pre-judging this client. I have a client who runs a company which is mainly involving in the safe re-housing of seized illegally imported exotic species, transporting wild animals across Europe and between zoos and re-housing animals from closed zoos, collections and laboratories. His experiences, many shared with me as his vet, include: wolves, porcupines. marmosets, capuchins and larger primates, penguins, flamingos, large snakes, alligators even an elephant to name but a few, let alone tons of more mundane and indigenous species, some which he keeps in his own private collection if they cannot be rehoused for medical reasons. I guess a request to neuter a Racoon Dog is small beer compared to that lot. But if they are pets well.....vitriol back on!

RE: Raccoon Dogs - Neutering!

Sorry....I just saw the word Racoon and lept into action on the forum. I iagree ...who needs a " racoon dog"? get a dog!.....from a rescue centre.....be a good citizen....

RE: Raccoon Dogs - Neutering!
What is it with people that they feel they must have the latest, weirdest, usually wild, animal as a pet? Neutering for both sexes is just like dogs but I find the ovarian pedicle is easier to access for some reason so they're a bit nicer to do.

Raccoon dogs aren't raccoons, apparently:

I've castrated a couple of raccoons ( one of them was called Nigel Farage!). We gased them down (with Isoflurane), maintained them on a mask ( you can use domitor premed if they are a bit feisty...but the two I did were handleable with gauntlets just in case of nips and wrapped in a big towel). Gave buprenorphine analgesia.

Then just castrate them like a dog: I did the open technique as wanted to ensure good blood vessel ligation in these cases. Also use intradermal sutures as they are great " fiddlers" in their " private parts" on recovery!
