But I'm a bit afraid of reducing doses much further in case he starts again. Fortunately he is on a good pet plan policy as his monthly drug bill is big!

RE: Keppra change to Pexiom

[quote user="Joyce Whitehead"]We have one Labrador (belongs to a very food friend of course) who was having severe cluster seizures despite phenobarb, keppra and kbr.
Joyce did you post about him before? I think I remember the thread or a similar one - very pleased to hear he is doing well if so?

RE: Keppra change to Pexiom

We have one Labrador (belongs to a very food friend of course) who was having severe cluster seizures despite phenobarb, keppra and kbr. I eventually referred him to a neurologist and he is now on all three of those plus Pexion. He has now been seizure free for 6 months, which is a record for him. He is quite sleepy but enjoys his walks etc. Interestingly each month he has a wobbly week (tends to be ataxic I should say) which ties in with his previous seizure episodes.

RE: Keppra change to Pexiom

I am currently managing (well rather trying to manage) two dogs with severe epilepsy. Both unfortunately have cluster seizures and they do at least once a month despite being on Phenobarb, Bromide and Keppra to stop the clusters. One of them I tried to get on Pexion instead of Phenobarb which backfired horribly (started on Pexion and weaned off Phenobarb) and was told later on by the neurologist that they don't like Pexion on its own at all. They use it to prevent clusters as add on in a very low dose (lower than on the data sheet).

RE: Keppra change to Pexiom

I have not found either drug to be that reliable on their own. I consider the jury well and truly out on Pexion though we do have a couple of dogs on it.

Keppra (or generic) seems to have been particularly helpful in addition to phenobarbitone in cases that just don't quite do with phenobarb alone.

I would not consider one or two seizures a week to be good enough. One or two a month might just be acceptable but those on phenobarb are having one or two a year!
