White walls, black skirting, and sawdust bedding (no straw)....this is a veterinary facility. He's opened the abdomen forward of normal maybe to avoid the scar of a previous C-section. From the claret on the floor the operation is in the late stages and the calf has been removed. Its a Charolais cow so the udder is normal. May be an elective caesarean. He's at risk of a DVT if he stays like that too long. He is in this position because he's lost his glasses and is suturing the body wall.

Well I reckon it's a publicity shot for Heston Blumenthal's latest venture. The chubby guy is actually Greg Wallace from Masterchef, tucking into steak tartare as fresh as it gets.

I wondered whether it was just a stock image of a vet operating on a cow, so I did a google search on the image. It came up with no exact match - but "visually similar images" of people fishing

My first thought was "is he kneeling down next to a cow caesarian"? I'm pretty sure his left knee will be on the floor or he'd be very unstable. That's just stupidly dangerous.

Then I'm not sure myself about the location of the wound - seems very far forward. I clip a lot of hair so I have a good margin around the wound. I'd have gotten rid of the shitty hair above the udder.

I then looked harder. There are two over dressed 'assistants' wearing head covering, masks arm length gloves and aprons, yet the guy operating is wearing nothing special. It just makes no sense.

(I do wear a green over gown, arm length gloves and sterile surgical gloves, but why dress up the assistants but not the surgeon?).

I though a very odd choice of a 'typical' picture to illustrate a cow in an article.

I know exactly what you mean - he seriously needs to lose some weight and there's not nearly enough bailer twine in the picture - clearly a studio mock-up.

Well I try to avoid being horribly critical of other vets because who knows the background story, but firstly I'd never kneel next to an unrestrained cow like that - he's asking to be hurt. It may be tiny but that woman in scrubs isn't going to be able to prop it up if it lies down on him.

Other than that I'm pretty glad nobody videos or photographs my Caesars because many, many times I've had to do things that are inadvisable, dangerous, unsterile or risky. That's farm work for you.
