This may have already been answered somewhere already so apologies if so. If anyone can advise me i'd be very grateful. I am treating a horrible dental abscess in a rabbit, I have removed as much of it as possible surgically however I am

RE: Rabbit dental abscess again!

Thanks all for your help. There is a possibility that finances have changed so when the wee one recovers from this surgery we may get to get some radiographs and go from there. I made the owner aware of the risks re depocillin (no pen strep in the practice) and of poor prognosis of tooth abscesses. Has anyone had one that they have successfully cured?? The ones I have had in the past have all done badly, this one has responded better than previous cases them and is the first time I have used depocillin to treat it as in the past it has always been septrin or baytril.
Thats usually a tooth root abscess

RE: Rabbit dental abscess again!

The data sheet for depocillin specifically says "Do not use in rabbits"

therefore you are leaving yourself open to litigation if things go wrong. Its not the same as no mention of rabbits where you can justify it.

I use pen/strep

its easier to inject too

Goodluck.

RE: Rabbit dental abscess again!
I did - just because that was a published dose so seemed a good choice.

RE: Rabbit dental abscess again!
I use 42mg/kg q3d for depocillin
These are like icebergs- the tip of the chronic infection breaks out of bone and there is a festering mess of infected bone and teeth underneath. Without identifying and completely debriding all infected tissue it ends up as palliative care but this is sometimes the most appropriate option for extensive or cost-prohibited cases. Long term analgesia and antibiotics slow regrowth but it is very likely to be slowly returning.

I use 42mg/kg q3d for depocillin but I do find penicillin resistance commonly where we have done C&S.
