Just looking for some opinion about a bladder mass in a cat. She is 12 yo, owners do not wish to biopsy. Although not confirmed TCC, could there be any benefit in trialing piroxicam, the BSAVA formulary says its not recommended in cats. Is there

RE: Bladder mass/tumour feline- piroxicam
When I first started scanning several years ago, I 'diagnosed' a bladder tumour in a dog, rebooked a week or so later with the specialist to confirm and was very embarassed that the tumour had disappeared- lesson learnt- twas a blood clot.
I know of a case where a stone/tumour was suspected, a cystotomy was performed and it was only a blood clot that was pulled out of the bladder.

RE: Bladder mass/tumour feline- piroxicam
Also, it may not be neoplastic. Anecdote and n=1 I realise, but I treated a cat with a proliferative bladder wall mass on ultrasound scan with meloxicam and antibiotics, and after 3 weeks of treatment it had gone! My thoughts were a nasty haemorrhagic cystitis with adherent clots?

I presuppose that if biopsy is off the cards then surgery is off the cards so seeding is less of a concern (and how much of a real concern I'm not sure).

RE: Bladder mass/tumour feline- piroxicam

Surely you can explain to the owner how to get a non-invasive, minimal cost, urine sample which is very likely to give you an answer?

RE: Bladder mass/tumour feline- piroxicam
I'd consider FNA of the mass to try and get a diagnosis
I'd consider FNA of the mass to try and get a diagnosis, may not affect treatment but knowing what it is allows us to better advise on prognosis and treatment options. If not I'd probably go for metacam

RE: Bladder mass/tumour feline- piroxicam
Any other suggestions excepting surgery ?
