The owner reported the bird was holding the leg up and seemed uncomfortable, and when she checked the leather loop on the right leg had shrunk

RE: Barn Owl with jess adhered to leg
I didn't have any suitable equipment in the building to cut something like that off, embarrassingly.
If its a split ring you can bend it open with a pair of dental forceps and slide it off. Better idea to microchip it (if not already done ) than have ring anyway I would have thought.

RE: Barn Owl with jess adhered to leg
I was concerned about the ring too, but it does move freely and easily around, it's a split ring too so I'd imagine it would open a little in relation to swelling.

Plus I didn't have any suitable equipment in the building to cut something like that off, embarrassingly.

Please keep in mind the risk of an annular scab constricting the blood supply.

I often consider vivitonin in these cases, broad spectrum antibiosis (consider antifungals too) analgesia as Gillian has said and yep I would laser this too

As already said, GA, soak and remove Jess and see what's left.

I've had some cases where it looks like no soft tissues remain and yet they have healed (eventually) really well. Others, however, have lost the blood supply to the foot....not good.

I usually just recommend cleaning daily then cover the wound with flamazine cream. It is amazing how well they often heal. Don't forget the meloxicam though..... they must hurt like ****.
