Scrapes hooching with Demodex. The ideal opportunity to do a skin scrape but I'd forgotten all about the Demodex as a locum has booked it in and TBH there was nothing about its skin that made me suspicious there was any Demodex at all, the owner said afterwards that he was aymptomatic and he's just been given the second tablet anyway.

RE: Treatment options for Demodex

I tend to give one tablet and give another dose 8 - 12 weeks later. As it's licensed for general flea/tick prevention, I just change their other preventative meds (usually stop advocate and use milbemax monthly) during that time.

I would repeat scrapes after the second application to see if any further treatments are required (but if it is working really well, there is no reason they can't stay on it for routine preventative).

RE: Treatment options for Demodex

Anyone used simparica? Thoughts vs bravecto?

Used it quite a few times and always seemed to to the trick. I sometimes go through the effort of using advocate as it is licensed but if no improvement after 3 pipettes or if getting worse before the 3rd pipettes is applied, I go for bravecto.

Ivermectin by mouth works really good (1ml per 17kg?? Not 100% sure) and used to be my go-to offlicense treatment, but isn't without risks of side-effects, not to be used in certain breeds at all and has to be used daily for at least 28 days.

Aludex works but is very messy and smelly and has to be applied in a well ventilated area. I am not a big fan of it, but have used it occasionally. Use it once a week and make sure to wash the dog first in a keratolytic shampoo as it tends to penetrate better that way.

RE: Treatment options for Demodex

second vote for bravecto.
