The patient is a 2y10m MN English Bulldog who for the last 6 months has been a repeat offender for skin. Parasite treatment is up to date and regular with Advocate. The main problems areas are skin folds (now well controlled

RE: Crusting head lesions in an English Bulldog

another vote for Bravecto

RE: Crusting head lesions in an English Bulldog

Another vote for more parasite control - I'd give it Bravecto personally as it's great for demodex and we've had a couple of bulldogs with chronic skin issues which scraped clear but demodex on biopsy.

And welcome!

RE: Crusting head lesions in an English Bulldog

I second Bobs advice about skin scrapes and don't assume mites are not involved due to advocate being applied regularly. Also what dose of cephalexin have you been using and for how long? I find bull dogs are repeat offenders for superficial pyodermas, for which the dose of cephalexin needs to be 30mg/kg BID rather than the 10-15mg/kg BID on the data sheet and for a minimum three weeks, with at least a week beyond resolution of lesions. Atopy is also a major predisposing factor I find.

Cheap and easy and almost as effective as antibiotics if done properly every 2-3 days to start.

Revisit the skin scrapings from time to time as they seem high risk for demodex. Don't rely on Advocate alone to deal with mites!

Can use Apoquel at the same time to make dog more comfortable and then tail off the dose to see if it is still required.

Obviously food trial etc etc as standard work up!

Sounds like it may be atopy.

I'd add in EFAs and also consider medicated shampoo of the whole dog, with CLX wipes in the worst areas

RE: Crusting head lesions in an English Bulldog

I'm sure someone will be along soon, but just wanted to say welcome to the forum!
