No iron supplementation has been given so far, but the dog has now started eating soil. What iron supplementation do people recommend?
Hi Anthony,

Depending on severity I often start with an injection of iron dextran (we use the brand Uniferon but other options available - often farm practices have something suitable for piglets), then would start oral ferrous sulfate tablets - generics available from most wholesalers.

Some dogs will also require transfusion if severe, plus obviously some investigation as to why the iron is low (often chronic GI bleeding).

[/quote]

Thanks for that Andy - I'm not involved in the case but it has had a work up and investigation, it's just the iron supplements we're looking for now!

RE: Iron Supplementation

I don't think it's the nicest thing to be injected with! Most dogs do react as if it gives a good sting and yes is IM, for that reason I only use an injection first if the anaemia is fairly severe.

By the reaction they seem to sting in piglets (cf giving something like an antibiotic injection).

Are you giving it IM?

RE: Iron Supplementation

Hi Anthony,

I'm sure there's better options out there.

years ago I used collovet, but anything with caffeine in it marketed for dogs has got to be bit suspect...
