Much of the time it is properly "Pemphigus, Expressed as Coronary Dystrophy". [an auto immune condition] Thus it responds to Auto Immune Therapy. Most of these respond well to re-organizing the immune system by Transfer Factor.

I usually instruct clients to expect to observe positive response in 30 days. They almost invariably write or phone in 10 or 14 days to report good progress. Most often they say; "He is his old self!" THIS is how he acted 3 years ago ! !"

Washing works well, provided skin can then dry. So clipping essential.

Fuciderm might help.

RE: Folliculitis , another numpty horse owner question

When you've done the washes Clare, have you washed the lesions or gone beyond them onto clear skin? My advice for rain scald/mud fever/saddle folliculitis etc was always to clip for about 2 inches clear and wash then. Dermisol to soften and remove scabs.
