Continue with the pred only as necessary whilst the source is discovered.

Swabbing a wandering cat's feet [litter tray??] is likely to be a very red herring.

That can be restricted to the paws in cats sometimes, and is steroid responsive (although not sure if is usually responsive to topical? Not a dermatologist!). Just a thought.
Not quite, as it's the haired skin thats affected, not the pads themselves.
If topical treatment works I might consider plain bethamethasone cream or cortavance topically, over systemic?
Good idea, could try that instead.

RE: Feline interdigital dermatitis

Does it look like plasma cell pododermatitis?
I've had a couple of similar sounding cases - 1 as part of more generalised eosinophilic granuloma complex and the other with previous nasty calicivirus ?related.

If finances limit investigations (biopsy would be my port of call), then I guess they limit treatment options too. Diet trial might be worth doing, cyclosporin might be an option, some of these odd inflammatory conditions can respond to doxycycline, but I guess you will probably end up on steroids. If topical treatment works I might consider plain bethamethasone cream or cortavance topically, over systemic?
