I agree with Mark- I worry beads don't elute antibiotic at useful levels for long enough and can cause a foreign body reaction later down the line. I tend to opt for aggressive debridement and marsupialisation with systemic antibiotics (sending the tooth fragment and surrounding bone for c&s is ideal) and flush wounds daily and pack with honey/topical antibacterial.

Marie
If Marie and Mark both advise against beads, that's good enough for me! It will help keep costs down too as they're not cheap. Aggressive debridement, marsupialisation, culture of tooth/bone, honey +/- systemic antibiotics depending on latest C&S results it is then. I will try to remember to take some photos and post progress reports in due course.

Many thanks for the advice.

RE: Rabbit dental abscess

I agree with Mark- I worry beads don't elute antibiotic at useful levels for long enough and can cause a foreign body reaction later down the line.
I prefer honey swabs as they eliminate dead space, liquify the pus and encourage granulation whilst killing bacteria.

I suppose if there was evidence of diffuse mandibular osteomyelitis I would consider their use more.

RE: Rabbit dental abscess

I took another swab from the bottom of the abscess yesterday to see if the c & s has changed. The original swab & culture was performed at the patient's previous practice. The rabbit is happy and well. There is pus from the site of the left lower incisor extraction and a soft swelling by the left jaw which I lanced and expressed pus to take the swab.
I would be opening this right up, removing and curetting any necrotic calcified material and closing with swabs soaked in Activon (Medical honey)

Replace weekly for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Consider injections of amikacin if there is sensitivity to this.
This is a reasonable suggestion. The owner is already flushing with saline, though this isn't going to do a lot until it's been debrided. Any favourites from this list?
