Any tips on removing a cheek pouch in a hamster? It has repeatedly been impacted and the owner would like us to try to remove it. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.

RE: Help! hamster cheek pouch removal booked this morning......

RE: Help! hamster cheek pouch removal booked this morning......

RE: Help! hamster cheek pouch removal booked this morning......

RE: Help! hamster cheek pouch removal booked this morning......

RE: Help! hamster cheek pouch removal booked this morning......

With the pouch everted, careful blunt dissection isolates the pouch from the surrounding mucosa and then I clamp it, place a transfixing suture and amputate. if Ive had to clear detritus first then it should be copiously flushed.

Heals quickly post op. I suppose there is the potential for infection, it being the oral cavity so I cover with abs. Hoping to laser the next non neoplastic one to see how that speeds healing up but I can't say Ive had any post op problems with non neoplastic ones. The ones with lymphoma carry the risk of ongoing lymphoma I suppose but some clients want to keep going. Never had dead space issues.

RE: Help! hamster cheek pouch removal booked this morning......
Surgical removal is relatively easy if the pouch is everted. I have done so for lymphoma as well as chronic impaction issues. reduction is also a possibility so for repeated impactions and repeated gas to clear them, removal is an option.
How did you approach it? Did you resect just pouch and did this leave dead space between skin and pouch, or did you excise a portion of skin too? I've never had to do this so would be good to know what you did and whether they had any problems post-op.

Can you persuade the owner to reconsider the plan and have it in for GA to examine pouch and teeth (ideally with endoscopy if available) plus cytology of pouch lining?

I haven't ever had to do a surgical removal so not sure of technique I'm afraid.
