Just what I'm doing, dog is so much happier on treatment and the malar abscess is reducing in size, so no rush for dental work and will stabilise first prior to an anaesthetic

If the bradycardia persists despite thyroid meds, will run an ecg, but funds are limited as ever.

TT4 was almost zero, less than 1 and TSH was off the scale high. Will retest at 2-3 weeks and go from here.

RE: Hypothyroidism and severe dental disease
Hi Rodney,

Very well and firing on all 4 cylinders -thank you, and trust you are well too?

Hope you are well.

I would check the result. Ive not seen a zero before.

As you know its obviously too old for autoantibodies

Can you get a t4 tsh ratio?

That would help.

If ti passed clinically otherwise I would do the dental. May be euthyroid as suggested

Best Rodney

I'd be inclined to start a sensible level of supplementation , provide antibiotic cover and analgesia for a couple of weeks then get the dental done. Once healed then decide if you can get the dog of thyroid supplements and retest later.

Assuming the malar abscess isn't causing cellulitis - if the face is swollen and the animal is in serious pain you need to do the dentistry now.

RE: Hypothyroidism and severe dental disease
Is there a link between hypothyroidism and being prone to dental disease in any way?
Interesting thought, but I don't think so. (Peter Southerden will probably now pop up with half a dozen papers that suggest a link )

The trouble with looking for associations with periodontitis is that periodontitis is so common anyway.

Do we know the causes of hypothyroidism or is it "idiopathic"?
