Took me a lot longer to do mine (avian, ungulates) as I'm not doing regular exports and have never done commercial bird/farm/horse export work. I found the exams tricky too with questions about obscure minutiae I have never encountered (and would normally have notes for guidance to hand, clarifying everything). CPD was tenuously linked to lectures about disease topics but isn't necessarily easy (especially for bird/egg exports). Case logs/examples were pretty simple though at least.

If I was in practice I wouldn't be inclined to renew given the hassle, expense and limited earnings. There are multiple discussions currently as to the rate of dropout, exam failures and general disillusionment. It seems poor planning to lose a large proportion of OVs not long before separation from the common market.

+1. I export lots of birds of prey and parrots. Not a single question on the exam. I really think this should be looked at. All eggs and day old chicks etc. interesting CPD if you have nothing else to do I suppose

On the other hand I found the products export module very useful. Im now a Jedi Master at exporting pigs trotters and the practice is starting to export more of this stuff, largely probably to the points Marie has raised.

According to the results of the BVA survey 32% of vets are not planning to revalidate their OCQ(V) CA status. This will leave a huge hole in the available manpower. When APHA see this maybe they will have second thoughts about revoking grandfather rights.

Regarding CA reaccreditation, yes it is March 2019. I flagged this a while ago. You would be surprised how difficult it is to find 7 hours of relevant CPD (the course is 3) I seem to just be reading article after article about tick borne disease. The OV conference is all very well but there is hardly anything in there for people just doing CA. Very few of the Briefing notes are relevant either although they did reissue the PETS guidance notes earlier this year so that counted for something reading them.

Tagging on to this thread, is it right that us vets who were grandfathered in onto ES (essential skills) and CA (companion animal) to be able to do PETS passports will be up for revalidation for the first time next year?

It looks like you have a 2 month window prior to expiration to revalidate (31/1/19 - 31/3/19).

As well as crossing improve's palm with silver, there's the following excerpts from their website:

If you only wish to maintain OCQ(V) - CA, you do not need Essential Skills and thus do not need to revalidate Essential Skills

The type of activities that would count as relevant CPD for CA are:

Reading the OV Export Instructions on the APHA Vet Gateway
Reading instructions relating to the Pet Travel Scheme
Reading information on policy changes provided via the APHA Briefing Notes
Reading relevant articles in veterinary publications e.g. relating to exotic diseases and notifiable diseases
Attending the annual OV Conference
Attending relevant pharmaceutical company CPD e.g. preventative parasitic treatments
Reading relevant articles in the O V section of Veterinary Practice
Mentoring other OVs who are new to OCQ(V) - CA work
Other relevant conferences and congresses or day courses

Case log:

You are required to provide three examples of your use of companion animal export skills. To do this you must complete any combination of the following (three in total):

A description of an export which went ahead successfully.
An example of when you provided advice and guidance to a client on a proposed export
Complete certification exercises

You need another MRCVS (or another professional) to invigilate your exam (because clearly a single MRCVS's word is not to be trusted).

I know this has been discussed before, but I thought it worth a quick reminder, and it's surprising how unnecessarily excessive the requirements are for simply completing the odd pet passport. The age of reasonableness is falling behind us.

I suspect the issue may be the following in a letter from XL Farmcare:

We understand that anyone who fails the online examination is required to wait seven full days before they can have a second attempt. Unfortunately, failure will now mean that the revalidation window will have closed after the lock out period and all re-sit vets will be treated like a new applicant under the Improve accreditation system.

My gut feeling is that is the situation they are guarding against, also giving a final poke to people who'd not gotten around to doing it, and were leaving it to the very last minute.

I will not be renewing my OV status beyond what is needed for my practice. I will therefore reduce the OV pool should a crisis arise by one!

Today the deadline has been extended for OV revalidation. Are there really that many vets that need an extra month to revalidate? I am slightly bemused by the fact that the revalidation date has been widely publicised, with lots of reminders from Improve and delivery partners, and plenty of notice of what is required in order to revalidate. And yet it has been extended.... have we reached the point where not enough OV's exist to meet demands in TB and other services, eg disease outbreak response? and if so, does anyone have any ideas what to do??

Just finished mine today. The website is not easy to navigate!

Thankfully (or not!) we're in a heavy TB area so I do plenty of testing. The case logs were a bit school-project-like but having supervised two colleagues through their TB training, I've managed to fulfill the 10 hrs CPD quite easily. The exam is relatively straightforward but read the questions!, They're worded awkwardly!

It's not up to date - milk quotas (gone since 2015), linked holdings (gone and superceded by ScotMove in Scotland).

Thanks Michael, I'm the only vet at my practice that currently does TB testing so no mentoring or supervision unfortunately! I've heard a lot about the XL manual - would it be cheeky to ask if I could borrow a copy to read through?!

I've spent more than 7 hours talking about TB, reading the XL manual etc in the last 2 years that I will create some kind of paperwork trail. The revalidation itself counts as 3 hours.

I went to some meetings, have mentored and supervised junior colleagues etc. I'm not fabricating anything, I'd just never bothered to count it as CPD before.

I've not tested that many cows, that was my biggest worry!

Thanks Sophie, will look into the webinars. I'm based in Scotland so finding a lot of the information and 'training' out there very England/Wales orientated so not particularly useful!

I think there are a couple of BVA webinars about TB that clock up another couple of hours. And I think you can count "training" or "supervising" colleagues as well. I attended a TB Farm Advice course run by Improve International (£40 for a whole day) to get some more hours. I think XL also may offer an audit day (get paid £100 to attend) that can count too.
