Take oblique views marking one side with orange needles so you know where you are. You can usually see the roots quite well, though admittedly better on the mandibular than maxillary arcades. Bit harder to distuingish whether roots are resorbing or retained. Much better than doing it blind though

RE: FCGS - anything new?
Apologies Evelyn
Assuming you take the rads. (having just removed several root fragments from an ongoing CGS case a few weeks ago.) Just make sure the owners are aware of the limitations of doing it without rads, but nothing to stop you going ahead if you're confident in your extraction techniques. You may end up removing bone only to find the root ain't there, but that should be the worst case scenario other than leaving a root behind? It may be worth speaking to Virbac as they there have been some studies with virbagen omega, but I'm not sure that there are any clear indications of its efficacy or the best way to use it. I generally only consider it if total caudal extraction has not produced satisfactory results.

I have used interferon (Virbagen Omega) in subcutaneous, oral and intra-lesional forms but although short term amelioration of the worst symptoms is reasonable I have not found it is a long term answer, not least because the ongong costs/compliance are unsustainable. As Evelyn suggests good oral hygeine and if necessary total extraction are still the mainstays of therapy.

RE: FCGS - anything new?

To answer the question posed in the title of your post: no, I don't believe so.

Possibly someone will nudge Peter Southerden or Rachel Perry, though.

Firstly – and I don't mean to belittle or patronise you, but I've seen people confuse the two so often – are you sure this is chronic gingivostomatitis, or is it just very severe periodontal disease?

Anyway. In my opinion (of course) in chronic gingivostomatitis, extraction of all cheek teeth is indicated as a first priority. If that fails to cure, you can experiment with raw food or interferon or both.

When doing the extraction, root remnants must not be left, however well buried, or the procedure will fail to cure. It's not easily explainable, but it is apparently the case.

(Which does raise the question, when removing a tooth severely affected by resorption: what actually constitutes a root remnant?)

If it's not chronic gingivostomatitis, but severe periodontal disease, then you only need to extract all affected teeth. Which may, of course, come to the same thing!

I think you all know my views about antibiotic use in general, and Convenia in particular, in oral disease, so I won't repeat them.
