We had unremitting sunshine on CITS in Austria the week before last. Mind you it was a bit colder than Florida.

RE: NAVC

The weather has been awesome - sitting on my hotel balcony 28C at 5.40pm

I don't mind flying but I did fork out a bit so I wasn't in cattle class.

Some brilliant lectures (Including Guillermo Couto who was excellent , funny and charming). Some a bit so-so (patronising lecture on spay complications). Some just highlight the difference between North American and U.K./European practice. Americans do seem to be ungodly keen on very early starts (6.30am lectures!) but it allows you to get a lot packed in.

Some new and interesting drugs on the horizon including Cytopoint from Zoetis, an injectable (canine) IL31 antibody to interrupt the itch cycle in a new way (or new to veterinary medicine, apparently a big thing in human medicine) and Galliprant, a PG4 receptor antagonist (or blocker, can't quite remember and I have a very big pile of papers to go through to find it - so not happening tonight!) with an excellent safety profile to use for canine OA. Intererestingly it seems the US market is only just having Bravecto introduced and they don't have Nexguard Spectra yet so I'm glad to see we're not last in the queue for everything.

Top tip-wise: it's easy to over-stain blood smears so back off a bit or you can miss polychromasia. Babesia is easier to find from a capillary blood smear - ear margin is a good site for this. Most osteosarcomas you can FNA so less risk of pathological fracture - if having trouble penetrating the cortex you can use ultrasound to find a mushier bit. You can make homemade active suction drains for smallish areas by cutting the hub off a butterfly cannula, fenestrating the tubing and putting the needle in a vaccutainer. Loads more things too numerous to mention.

Lots of socials from an opening gala with Mike Lowe from the Discovery Channel who was very funny, to a concert with Darius Rucker, a SuperBowl party with added puppies, and a closing seventies themed party tonight. Plenty of beer has flowed!

I thoroughly recommend it if you want to get away from rainy cold Britain next Feb, though just to note it is rebranding as VMX.

RE: NAVC

Missing it this year but have attended regularly since 2006. Am missing my sunshine fix but hate the flying.

RE: NAVC

I'm here :-)

They certainly seem to have very different ways. Way more enthusiasm, makes me feel queasy sometimes. Is interesting to see how other people do it.

Dental radiography lectures were good. Post dental full moth rads to protect myself against litigation for the 1 dog in my career that #'s it's jaw the week after I perform a dental though... Not my cup of tea.

Distinct drooth of beer thus far though. Not quite in par with SBSAVA, but there's time yet.

RE: NAVC

Thanks Clare. It's such a packed/varied schedule there's something for everyone. I pay for my own cpd so justify it by telling myself it's either Florida in jan/feb or Birmingham in April!

I have a problem with American veterinary medicine.

Remember going to the navc stream at bsava. Post dentals they insisted on 3 days hospitalisation and wouldn't consider anything but tplo for cruciates. Horrid bunch.
