My retort always is: Have you ever tried to get a horse through an open gate when it doesn't want to go or onto a float?

Have you ever seen a horse at the track not take off like a rocket at the first chance they get?.....

[/quote]

Yes I have, in answer to your question.

Most horses love galloping and racing for sure and many will give their all to their last breath. I know very well that the racing authorities are making enormous efforts and investment to make racing safer, I am just making the point in principle that the fact that a horse enjoys galloping and gets high on adrenaline during a race is neither here nor there in terms of our moral responsibility to the welfare of that horse.

PM report^^

There has been a huge uproar about this - obviously as it happened so publically and in such dramatic circumstances (for those who weren't watching he effectively outjumped, outfought and outran the much fancied, much-hyped, supposedly unbeatable favourite Thistlecrack to beat him virtually on the line, before collapsing and dying on his way back to the winners' enclosure).

The problem is that after both his Grand National and Hennessey wins Many Clouds suffered episodes of hyperthermia/exercise related ataxia. So everyone assumed this was also the case on Saturday and were quick to jump up and down and shout that he should have been retired from racing after the Grand National. However his jockey (who has ridden him in every one of his races) has adamantly maintained that what happened on Sunday was totally different - he did not feel 'cooked', he had come back down to a walk, ears pricked and was starting to recover from the race - unlike the previous episodes. The PM bears this out - there was no relationship to what had prevsiouly happened, and no way of predicting what was going to happen on Saturday.

This was arguably one of the fittest horses in the country, who had had a successful pre-season wind op and was reportedly on the form of his life - borne out by the race result. Sure, it was a tough race, but pretty much every winner on Saturday ran a tough race. It bugs me that the internet has been full of people jumping to conclusions before the PM was even performed. But I guess that's par for the course.
