Eilidh, that's how I started with drains in the 1980s. Cutting small holes along the length of a piece of sterile drip tubing and then using it for anything up to a pyothorax. Clogs up easily and is so much stiffer than a penrose drain, so more fb reaction. Easy to flush though! I'd worry about frazzling latex gloves, leaving bits behind, especially when fixing them with a suture.

I wouldn't want to use anything but proper surgical draining tubes these days.

We recently switched to mila Flexidrains. It does look quite different, lots of little white tubes stuck together in a row. You pull what you want off and can autoclave the remainder again. I haven't actually used it yet though, still working through the last few penrose drains

Is it possible that the source of latex ones is drying up as they're not used in people? I'd be surprised if the silicone ones are to disappear also? e.g.

Such a shame though, they are very cheap and effective. Or practice probably uses a couple a month for stitch ups or big lumpectomies. I will miss them :(

A latex glove might do it. I was wondering if I could bodge something with a bit of drip tubing perhaps.

It is true that they are discontinued...Our wholesaler (Centaur) also now out of stock.

I guess we'll manage without, didn't use them very often.

I was aware of other suppliers but if it's true they're being discontinued, just wondered if there's any alternative?

I don't get supplied by Henry Schein, but I do think it's unlikely that they will not be supplying penrose drains, so maybe send them an email yourself.
