What an arsehole of a disease. I'm in a sheep-heavy area of a sheep-heavy region (Northern Ireland) and I just, I dunno, I feel like it's taking a real stranglehold and it has the potential to run riot through the national flock.
Interesting. I'll read that in more detail next week. Then ring Biobest!
We export an awful lot of sheep to Ireland and to Scotland and I'm having a hard time reconciling my duty to 'examine' the sheep whilst also signing paperwork saying that to the best of my knowledge they are free of infectioius diseases. How far is an examination supposed to go?! :/

RE: Ovine Pulmonary Adenomatosis / Jaagsiekte
Michael are you saying here that those affected flocks have increased prevalence of lesions despite your scanning them and culling early offenders? Or have you only recently begun to scan?

I agree with you on the silence amongst farmers part. They are a very secretive bunch of people, with shocking standards of biosecurity. So common sharing rams or teasers. The pedigree side is particularly incestuous. It's amazing that everyone doesn't have everything. I think sometimes the issue is people want to keep very quiet about it, because they worry the effect it will have on them selling breeding animals to others. Ultimately someone who knows their disease status is still a safer bet then the unknown, but that's hard to get across.

Moredun are doing some work looking at OPA and looking at PCR testing in the live animal and it doesn't work that well. It looks like high numbers of false negative results - so useful to decide on a group of thin sheep is the disease is on farm, but not useful in the diagnosis of the individual animal. They don't respond serologically, so an antibody test is out, as [probably] is some kind of vaccine.

There are a number of practices using ultrasound to screen flocks, looking for early lesions. It's not hard, gets you on farm, and allows affected animals to be removed from the flock whilst healthy. In theory should reduce spread and allow a good cull price for an animal in early stages of disease. We do some and the worst affected farm has seen a dramatic decrease in prevalence of lung lesions over the 3 years.

http://veterinaryrecord.bmj.com/content/177/14/366.abstract

I can email you the full paper if you can't access it.

The Sheep Vet Society and Moredun have run a number of CPD courses teaching the technique, but with practice and looking at some images it is quite easy to teach yourself. Especially if you can PM some of the worst cases to confirm (this is what we did).

http://www.sheepvetsoc.org.uk/news/vet-cpd-opa-scanning-15dec

We find a lot of both OPA and Johne's and a scattering of MV. Lots of denial. Not sure I have a great solution.

Both Julian Earl and Iain Richards are more 'sheepy' than me so may know more. My wife has done most of the scanning and is particularly interested in OPA so I can ask her anything you have very technical.

RE: Ovine Pulmonary Adenomatosis / Jaagsiekte

Hardly seen it until one case last month in a bought in ram.
