Swing the sock so it pats the affected area and leaves a thin coating of lime on the surface. Replace with a fresh sock when it gets a bit manky. They used to use this in the Army as a prevention of thrush and I have found it useful in early cases.

RE: Current treatment for thrush of hoof

As above. If it causes a deep median sulcus in the frog then that can create problems. In those cases I get the farrier to trim as much as possible then get the client to stuff metronidazole tablets up into the cleft a couple of times a week. They stick up there surprisingly well and you'll soon find the cleft filling. Back in the day we used Metronex paste for this but it's been off the market for 10 years or so. Although at least one of my clients seems able to procure a metronidazole paste from Ireland...

RE: Current treatment for thrush of hoof

If its bad then I'd use one of the topical antibiotic aerosols - despite its name its a bacterial rather than fungal infection. Have used the tetracycline products, but there is now a yellow one with a different active - I don't know which is better.

Peroxide seems to help as maintenance, but clean and dry feet is the mainstay. I wouldn't be frightened of some topical antimicrobials to get on top of things and break the cycle. We used the use the 20vols/6& H2O2 neat - that's already pretty dilute. Makes lovely bubbles.

RE: Current treatment for thrush of hoof

Sudocrem also good for control
