Hmmmm.... I spoke to Henry Schein about their CHX spray ages ago when hexarinxe disappeared. I asked how many pump sprays were in the bottle and they promised to get back to me and let me know. They didn't.... It is considerably more expensive than hexarinse was for a much smaller quantity, so I haven't used it.

Xylitol is toxic in dogs, but not at the concentration used in vet aquadent. There is some evidence that it can retard plaque formation, but there is no evidence that it helps when added to drinking water and swallowed (I have asked virbac specifically for any evidence and there isn't any). It is not a produce which I recommend.

RE: Chlorhexidine solution

We've just had a Henry Schein dental catalogue delivered, and they have both a spray and gel version of chlorhexidine in there.
Why bother, its doesn't do any good anyway. At the dilution it would work its too toxic, at lower dilutions it is little more than a placebo giving the owner something to do.
[/quote]

Chlorhexidine is one of ther very few things other than brushing which has some evidence behind it. There is a good deal of evidence for the efficacy of CHX against plaque bacteria at concentrations of 0.12-0.2% (at which toxicity is not an issue). I agree that brushing is the gold standard, and generally I use CHX rinses alongside brushing for patients with particular plaque sensitivity (such as CUPS cases).
