I was asked today by a client about artificial insemination for her french bulldog. It is not urgent, she is planning to breed towards the end of next year. Is anyone of you aware of a vet in Scotland (preferably Inverness area) who performs

RE: Anyone doing artifical insemination for dogs in Scotland?

I'm chuffed to get a star !!!

RE: Anyone doing artifical insemination for dogs in Scotland?

If they don't want to travel tell them to get chilled semen. If you have no previous experience you will not be able to work with frozen.

It is actually quite easy to plan it. Ask for the chill semen to be shipped once the bitch ovulates. Ask what type of extender they will be using, some will maintain the semen viable for 3 days some for up to 8. But you want it as fresh as possible.

The KC is clear regarding frozen semen: the dog must be overseas or dead unless Irish Wolfhound. Otherwise they need special permit.

Why is anyone bothered about the number of stars received, are you here to receive acceptance form people you don't know? LOL, sado :)

RE: Anyone doing artifical insemination for dogs in Scotland?

[quote user="Sammy82"]Why did I get one star for asking a question? The male dog is in the south of England. The client doesn't want to travel down to England where the male dog is, that's why she was asking about AI. Therefore it will have to be frozen/chilled semen. I will remind the client to check the KC rules regarding AI. We are not planning on being involved in the whole process as me and my colleagues have no experience with AI, I simply want to find out for her who does it.

Why did I get one star for asking a question? It was neither my idea to breed this dog nor to use AI.

RE: Anyone doing artifical insemination for dogs in Scotland?

If the bich is KC registered you might want to discuss this with the client, there are some rules on the KC website. If it's not it won't make any difference.

If it's fresh semen they plan to use then intravaginal is sufficient, for chilled or frozen they will need TCI.

If you want to collect the dog remember than collection is not masturbation. Don't manually handle the dog's penis too much it will only scare him. put pressure with two fingers at the base of the penis and you will feel the bulbs swelling.

When you inseminate remember to go up, it's surprisingly easy to ins the bladder.

RE: Anyone doing artifical insemination for dogs in Scotland?

IT is easily achievable by any GP vet - no rocket science involved although not all males will oblige when you see fit!

RE: Anyone doing artifical insemination for dogs in Scotland?

I heard it on the grapevine that there is a Lady in the North Berwick area that offers this service for canines. A fair cost is involved but if you are desperate - well!!! I know it's outwith the Inverness catchment area - but!? Go onto the Internet and get a DIY kit - they supply gloves ???
