Odd you say that- I've heard a couple of rumours of guinea pig deaths in areas with rabbit VHD2 losses. I remain highly sceptical though till morbidity is substantiated alongside positive detection of virus.

RE: Blown up guinea pigs !?!

second g. pig died yesterday , PM - haemabdomen, haemothorax marked haemorrhagic pericardial effusion with some pericardial thickening -guess restrictive pericarditis caused congestive heart failure leading to other signs unless we have ebola or VHD in g. pigs now

RE: Blown up guinea pigs !?!

The only cause of profound oedema I have seen in GPs is congestive heart failure. They do blow up quite dramatically when they decompensate. It would be a coincidence to have both do exactly the same concurrently but not impossible as cardiac disease is pretty common and similar onset time is plausible if genetically similar individuals kept under the same conditions.

I can't think of anything infectious/toxic that would cause this I'm afraid other then envenomation but you wouldn't be likely to have two live guinea pigs with adder bites! I have a vague memory of clostrial induced oedema in farm animals but again that is pretty acutely fatal.

Heart scan may be useful if it can be done at a price owners can cope with otherwise difficult to choose a direction to follow other than symptomatic treatment.
