The BSAVA formulary states a dose of 5 mg SID, but does not state the duration. Does anyone in here know? The dog presented with high fever and elevated CRP /neutrophils/monocytes and was somewhat depressed. i put it on Baytril and carprodyl, and now, since Ypozane was unavailable, a 4,7 mg Suprelorin chip. We do not have access to Tardak here. My only other option in the acute stage was to administer a promone injection to cover the gap before the Suprelorin sets in. I kinda shyed away from that since the effect would stay on for 3-5 months, which means that it would be under influence of both the Promone and the suprelorin for quite a long time. Since the gland was quite inflamed I reckoned that antibiotics and NSAID would do some of the job of reducing the size at first, so no promone for this one.. maybe wrong.. maybe right..

RE: Finasteride (Proscar) in canine BPH

If it is BHP (it is slightly old for it to show first off so how have you diagnosed it?) then Suprelorin is superb. Regardless if neoplasia is co-existing the argument is that you will still get some palliative relief from the basis reduction in bulk attributed to the BHP via Suprelorin's effect.

In severely affected acute cases, there is a school of thought to give an injection of Tardak Day 0 and Day 7 and administer the implant at the second injection on the basis that the Suprelorin takes a month to really take effect. I have repeated it a second time then not needed to again.

Some young dogs take years to return to reproductive function depending on size and breed and also the disintegration rate of the wafer vehicle of the implant. The original work was done in Australia so we have had it here since early 2000s. The issue of small dogs going through the implant faster and sighthounds taking a 18mths to 2yrs to shrug the effect off does work in your favour for an old dog. Not so good if using it in a young breeding male hence I have moved to only using it in proven male studs and if possible get a testosterone level before I use it -and if the dog is a very valuable stud then I now advise against it.

RE: Finasteride (Proscar) in canine BPH

Thanks for the useful answers :-) went for a 6 mo Suprelorin chip. Forgot to mention that the chap is 13 years old, and so the owners were not too keen on having him undergo surgery, even though its a minor procedure. I have seen some dogs relapsing after a treatment with Ypozane (and thus needing castration anyway) so am gonna check up on studies regarding relapse rates. Its not cheap, so cost-wise I begin to wonder if its not better to advocate for some sort of castration in the first place?

RE: Finasteride (Proscar) in canine BPH

Castrate it.
