Some of the intra-nasal can confer protection within 5 days on a first immunisation, dont know how fast the booster not given within the time frame will protect. I have found that seems to shut the spread down.

There is a potential for KC BB to be zoonotic to the immunosuppressed so check out the 2 and 4 legged in contacts. A tip I learnt from a UK eminent practitioner years ago was that Full fat vanilla ice-cream- one teaspoon to tablespoon tid to an affect KC dog (esp if coughing post intranasal vaccines) for 48hrs was a wonderful anti-tussive. I was wary given lactose issues in dogs etc but gave it a try and was so impressed. The owner of a new puppy who worries about ány reactions post vaccine is transformed when you advise that the only time a dog is allowed ice-cream will be if they are coughing post the vaccine and you can use the ice-cream for 48hrs. T. The worried owner goes to keen owner hanging out for the sign of the first cough so they and the dog can indulge in the forbidden treat. Actual infected dogs obviously will need more than just ice-cream to address issue. It must be full fat so no xylitol sweeteners etc in it and not choc.

RE: Kennel Cough in multi dog households

I'm happy vaccinating in contacts, as I would in an IBR outbreak in cattle. Not sure if it makes much difference TBH, but happy it does no harm.

RE: Kennel Cough in multi dog households
One dog gets it...what do people do with the rest of the in contacts when it's not possible to isolate the affected dog - vaccinate in face of challenge knowing they may already be incubating - prophylactic abs or wait and see..
I wait and see, sometimes they pass it on to the other dogs, sometimes they don't. Also I don't routinely give antibiotics to dogs with kennel cough, I often give Metacam, particularly if the owners say that the dog seems unwell. I have also very occasionally given a one off injection of dexamethasone to dogs where the cough is constant and keeping them awake, not ideal but it works really well.

RE: Kennel Cough in multi dog households

I'd wait and see personally.. It's possible that vaccination can give clinical symptoms too. The incubation period is 10-14 days if my memory serves me correctly so not too long to wait.
