We can't seem to get it from our supplier anymore and we could source it from Tesco pharmacy with a written prescription but it was going to cost nearly £190 i think.

I agree - 100% success. I believe there is at least 1 published paper supporting its use.

I started off rather terrified I was going to shorten their lives, but it made an amazing difference and universally improved their kidney function!

RE: Amantadine / Symmetrel

not much to say apart from anecdotally I have put a few CKD cats on low dose metacam (with owners aware of risks) and their lives have changed dramatically for the better!

RE: Amantadine / Symmetrel
As for the OP, I might consider metacam for the cat
How about Onsior, I've used it with my old cat for OA, I would be worried about meloxicam, seen too many healthy cats go into renal failure with it let alone ones already with CKD.

RE: Amantadine / Symmetrel

any concerns on using amantadine of increasing risk of development of resistance?

I've always been reluctant to prescribe any antivirals (and unlike antibacterials there isn't really much temptation to generally!), but I've never been very clear on risks of develping resistance of concern to humans?

I gather the widespread use of amantadine in chickens may have led to some headaches, but its occasional use in cats/dogs sounds pretty harmless - right?

RE: Amantadine / Symmetrel

Alliance has discontinued Symmetrel syrup; generic amantadine syrup is available which is super expensive (I looked up £140+vat compared to £10.05+vat for the old branded product).
Not sure quite why but maybe something like what we've seen with florinef/generic fludrocortisone?
