My conclusion on reading it was that there was very little evidence to suggest anything on top of an NSAID added to longevity or quality of life, but it was a reasonable supposition that it might, and you could take your choice from a variety of suggested drugs (including mitroxantrone, vinblastine, chlorambucil etc.) with various levels of hassle in administration, cost and suggested monitoring required.

Thank you all very much for your replies! I didn't know about chemopet and it really seems like an amazing service.... yes, I should have looked on the BSAVA manual before asking.... the piroxicam worked out more expensive because being a small dog we had to ask Nova Laboratories to compound 4mg tablets, but if meloxicam can be a viable alternative I'll most probably go with that in the future.

Piroxicam vs Meloxicam notwithstanding, I'd also look at where you are buying your human generic drugs from - Henry Schein will not be cheap (though they will often price match); e.g. MunroVet list Piroxicam Capsules 10mg 56 caps £6.48; Piroxicam Capsules 20mg 28 caps £7.26

We use chemopet for some drugs, convenient and safe but not cheap

Also consider getting set up with the Phaseal system. Works really well for avoiding leaks when drawing multiple doses from a vial. http://www.bd.com/pharmacy/phaseal/

BSAVA Formulary suggests you can save it frozen up to 12 months. Moral: always look there first!

I know its not the same but I save breached vials of Vincristine in the fridge and use them for up to 4 doses in a month or more and they seem perfectly efficacious.

Have you tried www.chemopet.co.uk? It's a really useful service that will make up chemotherapy in single dose sized vials and deliver them to you as needed - it's not a cheap service but might be cheaper than discarding loads of drugs!

Thanks a lot Michael! I asked the manufacturer yesterday about freezing and they said no, but to be fair I think if you ask Dechra if you're allowed to freeze Tetracosactide, most probably they'll say no ;) so I think I'll give it a go, the owner is relying on insurance, but we're reaching the limit very quickly.

I was also thinking to change pyroxicam (£168 for 50 capsules) with normal meloxicam, if we become really tight. Prof. Nick Bacon at the last BSAVA meeting seemed to think that it doesn't make a significant difference, do you have any experience/advice on that?

A little internet trawling finds:

Wherever possible, you should prepare and use solutions on the same day. However, if you
need to make up stock solutions in advance, we recommend that you store the solution as
