What age would people recommend to start running with their dog? I appreciate it is 12 months for racing and that you should build up gradually but just wondered whether there were any guidelines?
Thanks

I posted on here last year about whether it was ok to do a 100 mile walk with a dog - he took the dog anyway and it was fine.

His next plan is to walk across North America with the dog. I'm quivering at the thought of the amount of paperwork already.

RE: Running with your dog

Our dogs (WhippetxLab and Flatcoat) started running from about 6 months because they didn't seem to get enough exercise otherwise. 10km but mainly off lead. That means they can find their own pace, race after a squirrel or trot along. They easily manage 50km/day on all day bike tours, like trails on ex-railway lines. 25km non-stop at 12-15km/h, faster (35km max) only on short sprints. British weather is ideal, they flag at >25 C, just like me. And they didn't enjoy the on-road / on-lead marathon training last year, max 21m with not a single squirrel chase.

RE: Running with your dog

In case you haven't seen this website..... http://www.canicross.org.uk/Guidelines_Canicross_Distances,_Registration,_Accidents_and_Responsibilities,_Distances_and_Temperatures,_Dogs.html

A long way (as people can)

African Wild Dogs hunt in packs and simply wear their prey down over many many miles. In this respect we are well matched as both us and dogs can be classed as 'persistence hunters'

Agree. While we're on the subject, there's an awful lot of BS spoken by breeders, especially of large breeds who say they've got to be wrapped in cotton wool and can't go for a walk until theyre 2 years old etc.

RE: Running with your dog

[quote user="Iain Richards"]There's also the "how far" question which would relate to breed type and how well trained it is to run the distances you want to run.
