It has made me more inclined to take FNAs from suspected histiocytomas, as I have to admit that I would have left this alone at the time.

RE: Ever seen a mast cell tumour in an 8 month old dog?

I warned them it looked likely but was just suprised based on my own experience.

RE: Ever seen a mast cell tumour in an 8 month old dog?

Never say never to anything regarding age.
No way FNA

This was a particularly boisterous and brainless boxer puppy, GA or hefty sedation would have been needed for a FNA, in which case given the lesion was about 5mm it was better just to excise with good margins + histopath = job done.

If a FNA could have been obtained conscious, then yes I agree.

RE: Ever seen a mast cell tumour in an 8 month old dog?

It appears well differentiated on the FNA so hoping will act in a relatively benign fashion but just deciding how aggressive my surgery needs to be. I also though was a histiocytoma initially but FNA yesterday was sure there were loads of mast cells and lab has confirmed.

I'm guessing this dog will be prone to de novo lesions in the future as well.

RE: Ever seen a mast cell tumour in an 8 month old dog?
I have. It was a 6 month boxer, came back as fairly benign and excision was curative. Lucky, because surgery was delayed as it was assumed to be a histiocyoma initially.
IIRC mast cell tumours in boxers tend to be more benign and have a better prognosis?

That's a good example where an FNA would have been really useful.

RE: Ever seen a mast cell tumour in an 8 month old dog?

I have.
Another one was a 12 month old Doberman. This one was aggressively malignant, had spread to inguinal lymph nodes by the time of surgery, and the dog was dead within 3 months.
