There was a larger-than normal (and compared to the contralateral side) interdental space between the 2nd and 3rd incisor, and the 3rd incisor was erupting

RE: Maxillary defect - advice please!!

Yeah.... I don't like the flushing option, had one come from another practice with water running down its nose once, better to repair at the start when the tissue is reasonably plastic.

RE: Maxillary defect - advice please!!
extract the two teeth most prominently in the way, resect your margins and close with 2m prolene or equivalent
Sorry if i've misunderstood, but there's a big hole there about an inch deep, lined with more or less normal mucosa. You can't just slice off the margins and join them together. If you wanted to close the hole you would have to denude meticulously the whole () of its depth then probably raise and mobilise a bit of a flap on the margin in order to close it without tension.

I'd just give the owner a syringe and show them how to flush the cleft with water if need be.

RE: Maxillary defect - advice please!!

Providing those teeth are permanent and not deciduous Sarah I'd explore under GA (for tiny puppies a Methadone/Ketamine/Domitor combination - its in the Dom data sheet - gives a lovely, predictable anaesthetic, maintain on 1% iso), extract the two teeth most prominently in the way, resect your margins and close with 2m prolene or equivalent (will need to remove later, prob under sedation).
