Heine , but genuine ones , watch out for cheap nasty things on ebay from India, will look ok but fall to bits in 10 minutes .and not that cheap .

You should be able to source replacements parts ie batteries from your usual wholesaler, if not then from J.A.K Marketing direct. Whilst you can buy from other places it may affect any warranty on the product, so always best to check before you buy. l have been using Heine steel otoscope powered by a rechargeable battery for the last 3 years. The battery died today-actually am not even sure whether it is the charger or the battery. Does anyone know where to urgently buy a spare battery? I have been searching online but can only get companies selling the whole set.

Heine heads fit onto the Opticlar handles. Vetisco do the Opticlar stuff at competitive prices.

I agree with the metal speculae for dogs, but cats seem to tolerate plastic better.

Heine wall mounted units here! Seem to remember they were from Ebay (not the heads or speculum s). Also have battery handles for situations where the wires get in the way. This is rare as they pretty much stretch from one wall to another!

I've wielded a few different types

Avoid

1) The ones that have plastic green ends, they deform. Many practices have the metal ends and are sterilised regularly.

2) There is a brand with a tiny viewing glass, awful. We all get older and our eyesight deteriorates, you need all the help you can get.

I'd recommend a model that plugs into the wall but if you want one free standing make sure you have the capacity to put normal batteries in as try as you might vets (yes locums too) will leave it on and off the charging stand overnight.

I love the Heine models.

Any views on LED models (Heine/Opticlar/other) versus traditional halogen bulb?

It's a Keeler one currently have and charger on the brink (only one side works and that needed a good scrubbing of circuit board to bring some life back to it) - new charger would be >£200.

Trying to plan ahead so don't end up with impulse purchase the day it finally bites the dust.

Am assuming LED model might save on bulb replacement / charger cost potentially and might pay for itself a bit, but not sure what they're like to use.

Needs to be suitable as only otoscope in clinic for conscious exams through to flushings under GA and myringotomy (dogs only concerned about really).

Another recommendation for Heine here. I have had mine (beta 100) for 11years now, had to replace a few things due to wear and tear but that is to be expected with daily use. Wouldn't want anything else really.

I had a Heine for many years, thought it would see me out, but eventually the rheostat broke. I replaced it with a Riester which is fine, possibly better than the Heine.

The range of specula that come with it is a very important factor. The Riester specula are excellent, matt surfaced steel ones. I was also delighted to find that the Heine specula fitted the Riester.
