He had a lot of tartar and gingivitis at the time, along with submandibular lymph node enlargement, halitosis etc.

All those I can see in the pictures appear, as far as one can tell, to have a straight periodontal disease with a severe degree of gingival depth loss.

I suppose you should try and rule out immunological or auto-immune conditions but if the client won't run to that sort of thing I would not fret, because it seems a bit unlikely. A short novel food trial would be cheap enough though. I doubt that a "dental diet" would make the slightest difference.

Those teeth have already lost a great deal of their defences and they need all the help they can get. I suggest a full and very painstaking periodontal treatment, with careful treatment of pockets, and a Sanos application. The previous temporary response to antibiotic drugs suggests that empirically you should then give a short course of Stomorgyl or Clavaseptin, whichever is least like whatever he's been treated with before. (Edit: so, Stomorgyl).

Nothing will do any good in the long term unless scrupulous oral hygiene can be applied. If the owner is not willing or able to achieve that then extraction may be the answer.

RE: Canine recurrent gingivitis

Sometimes my posts, and others are duplicated without my knowledge or consent.....

RE: Canine recurrent gingivitis

Might be worth exploring the diet as allergic gingivitis in people [even toothpaste] is not unknown.

Also a change in diet may influence the mouth environment and bacterial population.

Steroids would give the usual spectacular response but won't fix the problem unless the allergen is removed.

Being a yorkie might make any diet change a nightmare, but my usual boiled chicken should be OK, and at least you'll see in a week if there is any improvement.

As usual this is an easy cheap trial and you have little to lose if you do it first and not after £XXX of inconsequentual tests.

Worked well for me in a cat with a liver [food]/gum reaction.

RE: Canine recurrent gingivitis

And the other

RE: Canine recurrent gingivitis

This is the worst affected side...
