As I understand it the reason the hedgehog tick is not included is because it is very expensive to buy and therefore test!

Did find the rep a little overly pushy regarding the 'extra' benefit of Simparica, I suspect more marketing than real!

One or two people have reported small, dead ticks but not engorged. Not seen a single one on any of our dogs so overall happy with the product. Seresto has failed (flea wise) miserably in one case but this is a dog that swims constantly and I suspect is facing a massive challenge.

I used to be quite sceptical aswell but had a really unpleasant experience using Certifect on my 2 fit healthy adult dogs. I was aware it could cause sedation but did not expect them to be so ill, and extremely sedated and ataxic to the point of struggling to walk. I also experienced bad drowsiness and headaches (which meant I couldn't drive to the surgery to get atipamezole for them!). Problem resolved a few hours after washing to bl**dy stuff off. Colleague also had the same problem with her dog, as did several clients. Merial were unhelpful and defensive when I reported it. We are having a tricky time as very sadly an 8 year old pug died early one morning, 36 hours after a Nexgard Spectra tablet was dispensed by us for the 1st time. To cut a long story short, the dog had lots of tracheal and oesophageal mucus and significant BOAS on an independent Post Mortem at a lab but I am now aware of a Facebook page with 2900 members who want Nexgard Spectra banned and an online petition to this effect too. This has convinced the owner that the tablet is the cause and I suspect this has a long way to run for us.
Merial have been very helpful so far, I was just wondering if anyone has had much in the way of side effects (especially anything respiratory) - as you can imagine, the facebook posts make it sound lethal stuff and that side effects are common yet I've not encountered any so far when prescribing it.

RE: Nexguard Spectra side effects?
Although the company and the product was supposedly a secret it was pretty thinly veiled and it was obviously Nexguard Spectra. The person hosting the group kept on pushing the question if we would use this product for angiostrongylus if it had a licence and all of us kept saying we would consider it but it doesn't. These people are supposed to be unbiased and independent but it seemed she had a (not very well) hidden agenda. The product came out very shortly afterwards. It would seem that Merial were trying a balancing act of waiting for the licence with the commercial need to get a return on their investment and chose the latter.

Our Merial rep came in soon after launch and was following much the same tack as the host at the research group like 'we know its not licensed but it still works'.

Sadly that's as good a conspiracy theory as I can give you.

RE: Nexguard Spectra side effects?
We can't say it is effective against Angiostrongulus vasorum - it doesn't have a license for this.
I suspect they aren't going to get a license for it. I don't know whether this is true but I was told by an MSD rep yesterday that Merial have applied for a second time to get a license for angiostrongylus treatment for Nexgard Spectra and been refused again.

RE: Nexguard Spectra side effects?

We can't say it is effective against Angiostrongulus vasorum - it doesn't have a license for this.
I would be very cautious about recommending Nexgard Spectra for lungworm, although it has milbemycin in it the license for lungworm treatment has been rejected:

A single study was performed in the EU in dogs experimentally infected with third stage larvae of Angiostrongylus vasorum to evaluate the efficacy of two dosage regimens. In this study, the standard efficacy threshold of 90% was not achieved. Therefore, these data are considered inadequate to support the following proposed indication: “In endemic areas administration of the product every four weeks will prevent angiostrongylosis due to Angiostrongylus vasorum by reducing immature adult (L5) and adult parasite burden.” The proposed indication for use against Angiostrongylus vasorum was therefore withdrawn during the procedure.

Also I wonder if Afoxolaner is similar in its mode of action as Amitraz which is well know to be an issue in the breed.

RE: Nexguard Spectra side effects?

Hi Bob,

can't comment directly about nexguard spectra but we sell a huge amount of bravecto and I think its the same active ingredient (minus the wormer side) but a much higher dose and we have had absolutely no problems so far (used it since its launch). I would have expected side effects as the dose is high end to get it to last 3 months so a lower monthly dose should be safer.

I have used the standard nexguard on my own dog as I wimped out of the bravecto dose and she is fine. Sounds like typical internet - all drugs are bad - information, so best use witchcraft homeopathy instead!

We regularly get side effects (albeit mild) with Vectra, broadline, comfortis etc but cant recall any with bravecto. From what I am aware (I think!) the only difference is the combination of the wormer side and lower fluralaner dose.
