Looking for some advise about a wee hamster, she belongs to our VN and when she got her had lost her lower incisors due to cage chewing before she tookher on. She used to have her upper incisors trimmed every 4 weeks but hasnt needed them

RE: 16mth old FE syrian hamster? pyometra

Put it this way: if you've got the hamster in and sedated, why not radiograph the teeth?

RE: 16mth old FE syrian hamster? pyometra

Mainly thinking of xray to see what the upper incisors are doing and if they need extracted. But I guess the hamster could live with chronic resp/dental problems if eating OK but not with the pyo so that needs dealt with first?

She presented with sneezing/ocular discharge, it's only during the week of baytril her owner feels the discharge has become smelly and is persisting longer than a normal season. I'm just wary of doing surgery in case something else is actually the major issue.

RE: 16mth old FE syrian hamster? pyometra

Personally, I'd operate and see how things look afterwards. Having a uterus full of pus won't be helping. In my experience they look so much better after the operation

In X-Raying, what are you looking to achieve? If you are following up with extractions that's fine, but it would be a touch fiddly

 Good Luck

You think snuffles and sneezing just stress of infection or worth X-ray to check tooth roots before OVH?

We've done surgery before and they have done well it's more the worry there is something else going on as well that's putting her owner off surgery.

Thanks again

RE: 16mth old FE syrian hamster? pyometra

Sounds like a pyo. I've done these on hamsters and rats before and surprisingly easy and quick. Uterus is sat just under muscle so no hunting around. Nice stretchy ligaments so no puling or breaking things down. Give it a go!

RE: 16mth old FE syrian hamster? pyometra

Hi Alison

It will almost certainly be a pyometra

I speak with a degree of certainty as a hamster breeder used to come and see me all the time (If you google my name I am constantly reminded by friends about Hamsters and diabetes)

If a hamster has blood from the back end, think pyo, not cystitis, baytril deficiency

Cured brilliantly by ovaro hysterectomy, I did about a dozen and all survived and did really well. So go for it, it's easier than a Mallamute

I even tried a Caesar once, but that's another story
