I have a client wanting to take his dog to Tenerife for 3-12 months. I have two conflicting pieces of information about whether Leishmaniosis is present, one from Companion Vector Borne Diseases website which says yes, and the other an abstract

RE: Is canine Leishmaniosis present on Tenerife?

Many thanks

RE: Is canine Leishmaniosis present on Tenerife?

No endemic Canine Leishmaniosis in the Canary Islands as there are no sand flies - there are some cases reported but they were infected elsewhere.

There is Dirofilaria though so fly prevention still recommended.

RE: Is canine Leishmaniosis present on Tenerife?

AFAIK in orther to get the infection you will need both to have the phlebotomus that carries the leishmania parasite as well as you need to have a considerable amount of infected dogs (reservoir) in the island.

Due to the lack of information in dogs infection, looking for human leishmania infection in humans, it seems there are no registered cases either according to the WHO data.

Having said that it seems fairly safe to take the dog to the Canary Island in terms of leishmania risks. However, they are still tropical island, with other parasites, undesirable ticks, and I would advice your client to apply either some advantix pipettes, or get a scalibor collar while they are on holidays.

Hope it helps
