Sounds like a good idea. I have recently spoken to the owners of an ESS who had SRMA which relapsed initially after weaning off who has now passed the two year old mark and we are planning to recommence weaning him from his homeopathic dose to none at all.

IME I give it a month before reducing the dose. Mainly because I had a couple of immune mediated conditions that relapsed. Just my thoughts, and the dogs did really suffer with side effects so I guess it's a case by case basis. Dogs that have a relapse I treat more heavy-handed than at first presentation, this may be the wrong approach and I'd love to get feedback from someone who knows what they're talking about.

Then rather than wean off at 6 months get to your low end maintenance dose as you planned.

Looks like Wemeramers are an at risk breed of SMRA do maybe they have just been unlucky. This article suggests no antigenic trigger found...

Most of the steroid protocols I have read recommend reducing to 1mg/kg after 2 weeks then reducing slowly every 6 weeks with finally weaning off after around 4 -6 mths. Which protocol do you find works well?

I wouldn't reduce the prednisolone after 2 weeks, even if the CRP values have reduced back to normal (which I'd suspect them to do on high dose steroids...) because if you reduce the steroids too quickly it'll flare up again.

WRT the spinal tap, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, is repeating a CSF tap going to give you any more information? Especially as it was toxo and CDV negative first time round.

I think in Beagles it tends to be an age related thing and they often do grow out of it, but may require a homeopathically low dose of preds long term (I've seen Beagles maintained on 5mg 3 times a week).

I can't think of any environmental causes of SRMA, with both dogs being Weimeraners there could be a familial link, or just that they are a pedigree breed so have an increase risk factor, like idiopathic epilepsy?
