I had recently a handover of a 5 y.o Persian cat whose owner's main complaint was that he'd been lethargic and "retching" for about 8h. The biochemistry showed very high creatinine and BUN, and the plan was doing an xray and check his throat

RE: GDVs in cats?

Exactly, Evelyn! I've only had GDVs in large breeds too. Apparently, it can happen in cats as rarely as in humans. But cat's cases seem to be like a perfect moth
I think there's a little confusion here between: gastric dilation, which one does see now and then in cats and in little dogs (especially Dachshunds, don't ask me why) and which is easily relieved; and gastric dilation with volvulus (that is what GDV stands for isn't it?) which I have only ever seen in big deep-chested dogs.
Exactly, Evelyn! GDVs in cats seem to be like a I-know-everything mother-in-law, no one has seen one, but apparently they exist!
I'd be concerned about the very high urea and creatinine. If it was just pre-renal, then you wouldn't expect the creatinine to be so elevated. Did you check a urine sample? US the kidneys? Coujld be PKD.
No follow up. It was a patient from one of our member practices (as their OOH providers)

RE: GDVs in cats?

I'd be concerned about the very high urea and creatinine. But we passed it, we got some gas, stomach fluid (no food for over 12h), and just kept an eye on her overnight.

I must add we didn't hear her retching, as the owner reported. Other than that, she got some vetergesic to release her pain, and no NSAID for her possible sore throat (high crea and BUN).

And she was fine!

RE: GDVs in cats?

What treatment did you give and how is the cat now?
