A troll through the literature shows a strong body of opinion that aural plaques are caused by a papilloma virus (supported by histo-path and e.m. studies). It is postulated that the virus may indeed be spread by biting flies, and the lesions further exacerbated by flies - but it would seem unlikely that such specific and characterisitic lesions would be the result of fly-bites per se.

Re: Equine ears.

They sound like aural plaques, usually associated with a possible previous fly infestation, they are not like warts as the matter appears to be exudate rather than keratin proliferation as in a wart.

Old horsemen did indeed say that these were found in headshy horses, however I have ridden a few of these and can't say they were particularly touchy about their ears compared to any other similar equid.
